Check out Helen's melons!
Thanks to Marguerite who donated the melon plants. I have tasted this one and it is delicious!

Fireside tales

On Tuesday we head for Margate beach as the sun finally decides to shine.
Ryan plays sandcastle architect - he designs while mum does all the building work- and I take a dip.

Later on we visit Whitstable and wander around the harbour.

Then, after dinner in Sarre, it's back to the campsite for bedtime stories round the fire.

Herne Bay

After visiting Canterbury cathedral in the morning, we went to Herne Bay on Monday afternoon.
Ryan loves the arcades - tuppenny cascades and 'bop the crocodile'.

Later we stopped at the 'Bandstand' for a drink, and taking cover from a rain shower, we were serenaded by a xylophone ensemble playing the theme from 'Pot Black".

The end of a good day - fish and chips on the seafront watching the sun go down.

We've been away camping for a few days, at St Nicholas at Wade in Kent. Lesley Paul and Emma joined us on Saturday, and we visited nearby Minnis Bay.

Emma and Ryan had a paddle and played in the sand, but it was a bit too cold for a swim!

I've always been a strict 'landscape' man where photos are concerned [it's the shape of your monitor...and your tv], so this is a radical departure for me, dictated by the composition...
...still a bit of a 'Damien" thing going on, as you can see...or is that steel-like determination?

After losing to mum and dad at 'junior scrabble',
Ryan was obliged to carry out his forfeit.

Sometimes Helen and I call him Alexander, which is on his birth certificate. Alexander Smith is certainly easier to say than Alex Smith, which comes across like Alec.. [smart!] But I have this funny feeling that the long version will be used mainly when he is being told off!

While visiting Tenterden on Saturday we came across a classic bike rally and a meeting of the Post Vintage Humber Car Club in the station car park.
More photos here.

The photo was taken using 'self-timer' in the grounds of Bodiam castle.
We went camping this weekend, trying out our new tent near Biddenden in Kent. Alan and Barbara joined us with their caravan and we had a lovely time.

Our lovely old army tent had to go. It has been leaking all over since the thunderstorms and floods at Glastonbury last year. It has served us well.

The new tent was delivered on Monday, so of course we had to try it out. It turned out to be a bit big for our garden.
Isn't it funny how the weather turns bad the moment you start to think about camping?

Oh when the Saints...

Saturday 29th July, St Mary's Stadium, Southampton.
Ryan models Saints new away shirt after attending his first ever football match.
Southampton drew 1-1 with Panathiniakos in the friendly Ted Bates Memorial game.
